In Jinkx Monsoon’s final slate of performances as Matron “Mama” Morton, the production earned $926,363, up 2% from last week, surpassing its previous record of $913,161 for the week ending March 12. Joaquina Kalukango won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical on Sunday, earning the honor for her commanding and emotional portrayal of a determined bar owner in “Paradise Square,” set in Civil War-era lower Manhattan.
The musical features the latest buzzed-about performance from Kalukango, a rising Broadway star who was also nominated at the 2021 Tony Awards for her role in “Slave Play,” but did not win.
Idina Menzel stars in new musical WILD at A.R.T.
The complete cast is set for Wild: A Musical Becoming. As previously reported, Idina Menzel will headline the world premiere production at the American Repertory Theater’s Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Performances begin December 5, with the run scheduled through January 2, 2022.
Menzel and YDE (Nickelodeon’s The Haunted Hathaways and School of Rock) will star as a mother-daughter pair in the musical, penned by V (formerly Eve Ensler) and musicians Justin Tranter and Caroline Pennell. The environmentalism-themed story follows the family as they grapple over the future of their family farm.
